St Giles House Wedding
As a Wedding Videographer, I get to travel all around the country and abroad to capture beautiful and intimate moments. St Giles House Weddings suits our style perfectly as we look to make the most of reflected natural light, sumptuous gardens, wild flower meadows, and warm Dorset sunsets.
Nestled deep in the Dorset countryside, St Giles House is a truly incredible place with a fascinating history, the ancestral home of the Earl of Shaftesbury which has been lovingly restored back to it’s former glory.
Stepping back in time
To step in to the grounds of St Giles House, and explore the building is to step back in time – partially derelict until a few years ago, rather than rebuilding, every detail has been painstakingly restored, including the original paint and wallpaper, revealing gorgeous warm tones, and history wherever you look – it is a photographers paradise. The light is incredible, and I love this place, only a stones throw from my own home.
Bridal preparations usually take place in the Japan room, with original wallpaper, and doors which are not quite straight, but work perfectly, there is quirkiness wherever you look. The main staircase features old photos of Lady Shaftesbury, and as a bride walks down the stairs, there is an incredible sense of timelessness, as she blends in to the surroundings like a work of art.
The House
St.Giles House fell into a period of disrepair following the Second World War and appeared on the English Heritage “Buildings at Risk” register. In 2010 the new owners embarked on a project to bring the house back to life. What started as a simple plan to move the family back into the house developed into a full 5 year restoration project that is still ongoing. The restoration has since won several awards including: the 2014 Georgian Group Awards for the Restoration of a Georgian Country House, the 2015 Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) Award for Building Conservation, the 2015 Historic Houses Association/Sotheby’s Restoration Award and the Historic England Angel Award, Best Rescue of a Historic Building or Site.
Minerva & Tom (The Bride & Groom)
It was December 2018 and I’d always said how much I hated Christmas engagements because they were so predictable and so I assumed Tom would never propose in December. It was the first day of our two weeks off and I was desperate for a lie in but Tom kept trying to get me to go on a dog walk. I kept refusing until he got his mother to come and turf me out of bed and so I begrudgingly went (looking quite dishevelled). In hindsight, he was acting very strange (we did the dog walk we usually do but this time we did it backwards so that we got to the spot he wanted to propose sooner, he wouldn’t let me put my hand in his pocket to keep warm like I usually would etc.) but it was a total surprise and one of the best days ever. We got so emotional when he was down on one knee I don’t think he even ever said “will you marry me?”, he was just spluttering trying to get his words out but it was perfect. Wouldn’t change a thing
We got married back on 10/10/2020 with just 15 guests. This event will be a large celebration for all our family and friends who couldn’t otherwise make it due to COVID. Our original wedding video is here so you can get a feel for the day: https://tynegate-films.com/tom-minerva
We realised how important it was then to document everything on video because the day goes so fast and it’s hard to remember all the little details from which way the wind was blowing to what time sunset was. It was surprising how many of the moments after the reception I’d forgotten (champagne to blame). We want to be able to look back and recall the fond memories that would not otherwise stand the test of time (I must have watched our wedding video a million times already!). I’ve also always been interested in film/cinema (one of my favourite things that I do with my dad still to this day) and it’s like a miniature film of one of the best days of your life. I can appreciate all the delicate details and effects
We were looking for a very particular style of video that’s hard to find. It’s hard to find someone who is good at capturing all the little loving moments from head kisses to back tickles and use them to tell a story of the relationship and the day so that you feel like you know the couple even without needing to. The video on your website homepage gave me goosebumps (the drama and the cinema!)
St Giles House was so different to all the other venues we’d looked at. We loved how tasteful all the renovation work had been and how all the original features had been retained. The tapestries are so striking and the mantlepieces so grand – all contrasted with the underground club! The large windows are so towering that they let so much light in too, let’s pray for some sun!
Fun, exciting, relaxed, something unique/different, sensory (visual – florals, displays/centrepieces, aural – string trio, gustatory – canapes)
